Managing a trouble making toddler - part1

Our elder one is the best child in her kindergarden but she is a real trouble maker at home. Sometimes she really makes you crazy. For instance, she will cry for long time to get juice in bed. When you decide to give her juice in a cup, she will take the cup and pour it on her bed. Or imagine, you bought her an expensive book. She takes it to her room and after some time you can hear someone tearing papers from her room - she has torn her whole book into its pages.

Causes of Urinary Track Infection in Children - possible duplex kidney or ureter

What is a urinary track?

It is the system that takes urine our of your body

Who gets Urinary Track Infection?

Mostly women/girls

What's the usual cause?

Infection causing bacteria gets into your system through  the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body (Urethra). These gems can travel into your bladder and into your kidneys and can cause infection. .

Urinary track infection is mostly seen in girls but if boys gets urinary track infection, it has to be taken seriously.

Cause of infection in boys?

One of the cause of Urinary Track Infection in boys is duplex system (duplex kidney, duplex ureter) and reflex of urine from bladder back to kidney.

How is it treated?

Interestingly, 70% of the children having reflex of urine back to the kidney get normal flow (urine from kidney to bladder) after couple of weeks. There are several ways to monitor this, you have to ask your physician about this.

When boys gets infection and doctors could detect reflex of urine to kidney from the bladder, they usually give first set of antibiotics to kill the bacteria and another set (a very low dose) to prevent further infection, for the next couple of days/weeks.  The doctors will also recommend you to visit a surgeon after couple of weeks to check if reflex has stopped.

Take home message

 IF YOUR BOYS HAVE URINARY TRACK INFECTION, TAKE IS SERIOUSLY AND IF POSSIBLE GET A DOCTOR TO CHECK FOR DUPLEX KIDNEY AND URETER, HE MAY BE HAVING A REFLEX OF URINE TO THE KIDNEY.
